  • As a former hardrock miner with rescue training I was impressed with the Chilean response to the mine cave-in. I think our coal disaster cluster-f**ks need to learn from Chile. Contrast our mine rescue in the past with how the Chilean Government dealt with the families of the missing miners.

  • as a former hardrock miner trained in mine rescue, i was really pleased with the professionalism of the rescuers and the willingness of the chilean government to reach out for the best available technology around the world. and to do it all with openness and transparency.

  • this elderly democrat learned a bitter lesson when half my 401K disappeared in the dot-com meltdown. from that time on all my savings stayed in money market accounts. and when i retired in 2003 i paid cash for much less house than i wanted. zero debt is the way to go.

  • since when does a debtor 'demand' a creditor do what the debtor wants? do you 'demand' your creditors;; mortgage, credit card, car loan, adjust how they do business? and does it work for you? china's trade balance and dollar holdings are our problem, not china's.

  • cane sugar: 50%sucrose, 50%fructose high fructose corn syrup: 45% sucrose, 55% fructose. that is not a significant difference.

  • 23% of mortgages underwater...this is a group that can afford their current mortgage, are current on payments, but are stuck in their homes. illness, divorce, any family crisis, they cannot move on with their lives. banks hate short sales, so no help there.

  • a lot of people made a lot of money riding the housing/credit bubble. especially realtors who told their buyers, "don't worry about the price or the mortgage terms, you will always be able to re-finance". do you still believe that real estate values always go up?

  • wouldn't a further drop in housing values simply add to the number of underwater mortgages? nationally somewhere around 20% are underwater, in florida 50%. these underwater mortgages prevent homeowners from selling, especially in states where lenders can obtain deficiency judgements.

  • I think the media has missed the real import of our spy catch. The 'spies' were training cadre from Moscow to provide a 'spy ring' for trainee spy handlers and couriers. A sterile spy ring, teaching tradecraft. With real field experience handlers were ready for a real spy ring.
